What is EECP Therapy?
EECP is a non-invasive treatment for angina and ischemic heart disease. It may be a viable option for those persons who have undergone angioplasty or coronary artery bypass surgery and still experience angina.
What are the benefits of EECP?
- Improvement in quality of life, increase in energy levels and exercise tolerance.
- Reduction in episodes of angina.
- Reduction in medications.
- Clinical benefits sustained long term (3 or more years).
How long is EECP?
Typically, EECP requires 35 one-hour outpatient sessions via 5 days of weekly therapy for 7 weeks.
How does EECP work?
- The EECP system includes a series of cuffs around the legs that inflate and deflate in sync with the heart. When inflated, cuffs push oxygen rich blood toward the heart. When cuffs deflate, blood leaves the heart without the heart having to work as hard. With the increase in blood flow to the muscle of the heart, tiny blood vessels known as "collateral circulation" develop, making it possible for blood to detour around blocked or narrowed arteries, thus bringing more oxygen rich blood to the heart.
